October 8th, 2014 - Exploring Numbers
For the next while, our focus in mathematics will be exploring numbers from 1 to 30. Students will read and print numbers and number words, count objects, compare quantities, and describe numbers. We will also look at numbers around us - on our calendar, on book pages, and in many other places in our community and at school. Try these activities with your child: Read counting books together, play card games such as Go Fish and War, where players need to match and compare numbers, or build towers out of blocks and count to see how many blocks are in each tower (e.g., which tower has more?, how many more?).
October 6th, 2014 - I AM
Over the last few weeks we've been working on a very special piece of writing. Stemming from our conversations and work about what it means to be important, these fabulous I AM writing pieces emerged! This is just the beginning . . . stay tuned for our digital book versions!

September 15th, 2014 - Patterns are Everywhere!
We're learning that patterns are everywhere! Our eyes see patterns all around us. It happens when the same thing is repeated over and over again. Today we went on a pattern walk. Here is a sample of the patterns we spotted in and around our school.
September 12th, 2014 - Jasper Johns Inspired Alphabet Art
Today we looked at the following painting by Jasper Johns. We talked about how letters can be a part of art as well as lines, shapes, and colours. Using watercolour paint and crayons we were inspired to create our own alphabet artwork. Students were VERY excited to learn that the waxy crayon resists the paint when used over top. The results are amazing!
Monkeying Around!
One of the BEST things about entering Grade one is getting to play on the BIG structure. Look how happy we are to be outside enjoying the sunshine!
